Lockheed C-5 Galaxy
The C-5 Galaxy is an aeroplane of military transport logistico heavy designed to provide to intercontinental distances the strategic equivalent of the aerial bridge. It is the American military transport bigger and one of the biggest of the world, designed to carry a load of big size. The C-5 was designed and produced by Lockheed and is used exclusively by the Aerial Strength of the United States.
Mission
The C-5 Galaxy, with his enormous capacity of useful load, provides the aerial connection of the international theatre of the Air Mobility Command (AMC) in the help of the national defence of the United States. The C-5 and the C-17 Globemaster III are partners in the strategic concept of aerial connection of AMC. The aeroplane can carry military units to combat, entirely instrumented, (included cars of fight) to any point of the world in little time, afterwards provides the help of field required to help to sustain the strength that already is in fight.
History
The first C-5To Galaxy (# 66-8303) went out of factory the 2 of March of 1968. The 30 of June of 1968 Lockheed-Georgia Co. It began the proof of flight his new heavy transport C-5To Galaxy with the first flight of the aircraft that carried the air under the code "Allen-zero-three-heavy". On the terminación of the proof the first C-5To was transferred to the transitory unit of the training in the base of the aerial strength of Altus, in December of 1969. Lockheed Then it delivered the first Galaxy operational to the 437to aerial wing, basic of the aerial strength of Charleston, in June of of 1970. Several C-5 place in Altus AFB; Dover AFB; and Travis AFB. AMC Transferred some C-5 to the components of the aerial Reservation beginning with the kelly AFB, Texas, in 1985; followed by the base of the National Aerial Policeman of Stewart; and to the base of the Aerial Reservation of Westover, Massachusetts. In October of 2005 began to form an escuadrilla in the base of aerial strength of Wright-Patterson hover of Dayton. This unit composes especially of the aeroplane transferred of Dover AFB, and substitutes the C-141 of the escuadrilla, that were ready to withdraw .
Around the middle of the years 70, found cracks in the wing. Because of this all the fleet of C-5To was restricted to a maximum of 22,700 tonnes of load. To increase his capacity of elevation and life of service, 77 C-5To experienced a program of reacondicionamiento from 1981 until 1987. In the wing readjusted, used a new alloy of aluminium that did not exist ten years before. The C-5To with new wings finally was delivered in July of 1986.
The first C-5B that incorporated significant improvements such as wings consolidated and aviónica updated and was delivered to the base of aerial strength of Altus in January of 1986. The production C-5 concluded with the delivery of the aeroplane model "B" in April of 1989.
In March of 1989, the last aeroplane of 50 C-5B was added to the 76 C-5To in the structure of the strength of the aerial bridge of the aerial strength. The C-5B includes all the improvements of C-5To as well as more than 100 additional modifications of the system to improve reliability and capacity of maintenance. The 50 C-5B were programados to remain in the strength of reservation, shared by the units comparablemente classified.
Two especially modified variants of the C-5C were created for the NASA. This aeroplane, numbers 68-0213 and 68-0216, were readjusted for the use in the transport of big useful loads, such as satellites and, as such, has a capacity of internal load bigger that any one of the others variants of the C-5. A number of other modifications were done, including the addition of one second entrance for the energy of earth that can then use to feed any team dependent energy that can form part of the load. The C-5C are used by the teams of the aerial strength in the favour of the NASA.
In accordance with a recent study that showed that 80% of the life of service of the structure of aeroplane C-5 had happened already, the AMC began an aggressive program for modernizar the C-5. The program of the modernisation of the aviónica C-5 began in 1998 and includes the increase of the aviónica to the global compliance of the gerencia of the aerial traffic, improve the navigation and the team of security, and the installation of a new system of automatic pilot. Another part of the plan is a program of reacondicionamiento to level of engineering and to improve the reliability, that includes the new General engines Electric CF6-80, pistones and units of auxiliary power, with improvements to the external layer and frame of the aeroplane, train of landing, carlinga and system of presurización. The engine CF6 produces a 22% more than push that the original engines of the C-5 that will give place to a career of despegue a 30% shorter, to a ratio 38% elder of rise to arrive to his operational height, to a load perceptiblemente main and to a longer range between reaprovisionamiento of fuel.
The program of the modernisation C-5M plan to increase the relation mission-capacity to a minimum of 75%. During the 40 next years, the aerial strength of United States estimates that the C-5M will save on the 20 one thousand million dollars. The first of 111 due conversions to C-5M was finished the 16 May of 2006.
